Replacing Plumbing Yourself

by admin on 0

Replacing plumbing doesn’t sound that difficult, but DIY home plumbing can often turn out to be more of a challenge than you anticipate. If you don’t know how to do plumbing and are attempting it for the first time on your own, you do need to be prepared.

Have the Right Tools

When replacing plumbing, you’re going to need the right tools, plain and simple. One of the first issues that nearly every do it yourselfer runs into is not being able to loosen the joints. Having the correct items for the job can really help. You’ll be removing entire lengths of pipe, so be prepared to loosen lots of joints.

You should also make sure that you have everything you could need on hand, including extra glue and plumber’s wax. Finding out halfway through reinstallation that you don’t have enough glue to finish means extra hours without water or drainage.

Plan Ahead

Depending on how much pipe you need to replace, it can take quite a bit of time. Don’t forget to budget extra time for stuck joints or unexpected issues . . . you’d be surprised at what can pop up when you’re doing a bigger job! If you are doing a major replacement, it’s a good idea to have everyone out of the house for the day so you can turn off the water without grief.

Do a Final Check

Once you’ve finished replacing plumbing, turn everything back on and check for leaks. This is very important, since a simple leak could turn into something more drastic later on. DIY home plumbing isn’t complete until you have checked everything!
