Wood is beautiful, but often it needs an extra little touch to make it perfect. Wood staining is a great way to change the look of a room, particularly in a room like a kitchen and DIY staining will save you considerable money on labor and paint. Staining can be an excellent first project for those do it yourselfers who are just getting into restoration and home repair.
It’s a good idea to test the stain you plan to use on a piece of wood that won’t be noticed. If you like the way it turns out, you can continue, but if you aren’t sure, then try a different stain. It’s important to get something you like the first time since it’s hard to redo staining.
In some cases, such as with painted cupboards or wood walls, you may need to remove paint. Staining wood that has been previously painted shouldn’t be attempted until you’ve thoroughly sanded the surface to make sure it’s smooth and clean. DIY staining requires some patience . . . you’ll need to be careful to make sure the entire surface is stained properly. With wood staining you need to take your time and do the job well.
