DIY refinishing · Remove dust from varnished surface

Lots of times you will end up with lots of dust specks in your varnish/urethane surface. This can be very annoying especially if you’ve been trying to keep all these very tiny particles of dust, from showing on a perfectly finished surface. Obviously the first thing to do is dust prevention and this can be performed by first of all making sure that there;

· is no airborne dust in the room that your painting in

· close off any doors or windows to keep dust out

· properly clean off the workpiece with a slightly moistened lambswool cloth or tack cloth

· make sure you are using a cleaning brush with nothing in it

· multiple thin coats are good for two reasons, first reason it doesn’t have enough time to attract dust, second reason you can give this light sanding between coats giving the clear coating some depth and luster.

Once you have your workpiece completely is urethaned and you want your final finish product to be very smooth I would suggest using some 600 grit Black sandpaper and squirt some mineral spirits on the sandpaper and also some on the wood and lightly sand the surface like you’re polishing it. You may also want to use lemon oil instead of mineral spirits. The trick here is you’re not sanding into the urethane you’re just sanding the dust off the top, a slightly more aggressive polishing
